Born in Jimbaran to a Balinese mother and Australian surfer father. Living in Bali for 38+ years.
Two Worlds, One Island
My mother is native Balinese from the traditional customary village (Desa Adat) of Jimbaran. My father arrived from Perth in 1988 — he said he only planned a one-week surf trip, but he met my mom at the local fish market, and that "one week" turned into 38 years.
So I am a literal product of two worlds that often don't seem to connect. At home, my mom spoke Balinese, cooked lawar and sate lilit, and prepared fresh canang sari offerings every single morning. On the other hand, my dad spoke English with a thick Australian accent, insisted on throwing Christmas beach BBQs every year, and still wondered why Balinese people never stop smiling.
I grew up as a literal bridge between those two worlds. Whenever my Australian cousins came to Bali on holiday, they'd call me up: "Kai, where should we eat? Where's the real Bali? What is that ceremony about?" Meanwhile, my local Balinese friends were puzzled: "Why do tourists pay Rp 200,000 for a nasi goreng when the warung next door sells it for Rp 25,000?"
